What is an indie author?

Further up I wrote „… Books and eBooks by me, Daniela Lerschen, as an indie author.“.

I’d be happy to enlighten you on what an indie author actually is.

Have you perhaps heard of so-called self-publishers or self-publishing? Or have you read a book that said, for example, „Independently published“ in the imprint?

Selfpublishing means to publish one’s own work. As a self-publisher, you do not publish your works classically via a book publisher, but bring it out on your own.

The word indie author is made up of:

Indie: derived from the English independent, meaning autonomous, and the word author.

So free translation: independent author.

If you’re an indie author or self-publisher, you’re on your own because you’re the author, the cover designer, the typesetter or layout artist, the marketing manager, and possibly the proofreader and editor. You do everything yourself because there is no publisher in the background who usually takes care of proofreading and editing, for example.

However, some indie authors outsource work like cover design. Also, provided you can afford it, proofreading and editing should be done.

Because there is no publisher pulling the strings in the background, a so-called distributor is needed. This distributor then helps the indie author with the publication. For example, Amazon, Xinxii, and IngramSpark provide their platform. In addition, the distributor takes over the printing in the print-on-demand process. The author then receives his royalties from there, i.e. the income from the book sales.

You want more information about „my“ distributors? Gladly, then have a look here:
